Men’s Mental Health

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50. Nationally and locally 75% of those that die by suicide are men, with the highest numbers being 45-54 years of age. In Cheshire & Merseyside approximately 150 local men take their own lives every year. This is a tragedy for the person and for all those bereaved.

Cheshire & Merseyside has some of the most deprived areas of the country where residents face many challenges, and we know that men living in the most deprived areas are up to ten times more at risk of suicide than those living in more affluent areas.

Our Vision is that ‘people don’t see suicide as a solution to the difficulties they face’. Preventing men from dying by suicide and building men’s mental fitness involves both health services and community-based services, providing men with the right service that meets their needs.

Community based men’s mental health programmes

Men’s mental health community programmes in Cheshire & Merseyside cover a range of services, offering social activities, the opportunity to learn new skills, building mental fitness and programmes with local sporting clubs and heroes.

Men’s mental health provision in Cheshire & Merseyside is being further boosted by NHS England funding for middle-aged men’s community projects. The NO MORE Suicide Partnership commissioned a report on what works for men’s community-based programmes. The report: ‘Rapid Review of Community-based men’s mental health and suicide prevention interventions’ (by Edgehill University et al 2021), and a report which outlines key learning from NHSEI-funded suicide prevention projects delivered between February 2020 and June 2021 for middle-aged men (40-60-years-old) living in Cheshire and Merseyside, is available below.
